Earl Thomas Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, entered into eternal life at his residence in Chalmette, LA on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 84 years old. Earl was born in New Orleans, LA on July 15, 1939 and was a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish. He was a proud Alum of Holy Cross High School, New Orleans, Class of 1957. He also attended University of New Orleans. Earl went on to have a prosperous 35-year career at Murphy Oil Refinery where he served in numerous capacities and retired as the Manager of Permitting Marketing Constructions in 2007. Earl is survived by the love of his life, Brenda Heier Smith, who he shared 62 wonderful years. He was the proud father to Earl Jr. (Michelle), Patrick (Deborah), Michael (Amanda) and Craig (Gretchen). He was a doting grandfather to Bryce, Macie, Victoria, Elizabeth, Colin Thomas, Colin Joshua, and Taylor (Karl); great-grandfather to RileyKate; and brother to Lynn Crissinger (the late Michael).
Earl was a true outdoorsman. He found solace in the simplicity of nature, whether it was golfing, duck hunting, or fishing down in Delacroix. He embraced life's simple pleasures with enthusiasm and gratitude. Yet, his greatest joy came from sharing history with his family, especially his grandchildren, who held a special place in his heart. Earl was a walking historian who loved to share his knowledge with anyone who was willing to listen. Earl is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Rosalie Smith and his sister Ann Marchese (the late Vincent). Earl will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on forever in our hearts and the lives of the people he touched.
The family would like to thank Ochsner Hospital and the many staff that have been involved in Earl’s care, but especially, Dr. Marc Motrana and Dr. Esther Dupepe.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ochsner Cancer Center, Ochsner Children’s Hospital, or any church or charitable organization of your choice.
