David John Hamburger, age 67, a longtime resident of Chalmette, Louisiana, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018. He was born March 6, 1951 in New Orleans to Wilbur and Maud Hamburger. He met Deborah Jean Ryan while he was a junior at Chalmette High School and she was a junior at Holy Angels Academy. They married in 1970 and celebrated their 48th anniversary earlier this year. He graduated from Chalmette High School in 1969 and went on to graduate from Louisiana State University-Baton Rouge in 1973. After initially working for the Forestry Service in Arkansas, he returned to Chalmette where he lived and raised his family. David worked in the sheet metal industry for years at Nadustco in New Orleans and was also an instructor with Delgado Community College. He later joined SGS North America and ultimately retired in 2016 as an Operations Coordinator. He also earned his real estate license in the 1980s, and he continued to serve the community as a licensed realtor until he passed. Additionally, he proudly served as a Reserve Deputy with the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office for 20 years.
He was incredibly generous with his time and talents, and he never missed an opportunity to help his family and friends. He enjoyed serving his boiled crawfish in the spring and his fried turkeys in the fall. Vacationing with his family was always a joy for him, and some of his favorite destinations were the Tennessee Smokey Mountains and Disney World. He enjoyed many of the local opportunities for music and celebration, frequenting local festivals with his family through the years—Oktoberfest was always a favorite. He was a gifted craftsman and loved taking on projects that involved working with his hands. Most importantly, he was a strong believer, resolute in his Christian faith, and the spiritual head of his household.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah; sons and daughter-in-law Matthew Hamburger, Jonathan and Heidi Hamburger, and Christopher Hamburger; daughters and son-in-law Amanda and Keith Carmon, and Christine Hoover; grandchildren Joshua Brice, David Franklin, Madison Leigh, Michael Robert, Paige Noel, Antoinette, and Guinevere; brother and sister-in-law Paul and Nancy Hamburger; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Maud Hamburger.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Sunday, August 19, 2018 at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. VIRTUE STREET, in Chalmette, from 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM.
