Alvin “Fox” Linford Spurlin, Sr. passed away on Monday, May 9, 2022. He was 78 years old. He was born on November 3, 1943, in Shelby, North Carolina, to Johnny Linford Spurlin and Effie Dawn Starnes Spurlin. He was the oldest of five children. Fox drove an 18-wheeler in his early years, loved to fish, hunt, water ski, play cards, camping, and antiquing. After semi-retirement, he became an honorary member of the DOP (Damn Old People), a group of likeminded individuals who enjoyed spending their golden years together. He loved family gatherings, good food, and joking with his friends. Fox worked as a contractor in the French Quarter for Ethel Kidd Real Estate after moving to Louisiana. He immersed himself in the culture and preservation of the history of New Orleans, while carving out a legacy of his own in the community.
Left to cherish his memory are his children by his first marriage, Robin Dawn, Steven Scott, and Chad Aaron Spurlin; his brothers, Willie Spurlin (Diane) of Texas, and Wayne Sprulin (Gail) of North Carolina; his sister, Fay S. Petree and his half-sister, Julie Zimmerman of North Carolina; his step-daughter, Dawn Leslie (Amadeo) of Louisiana; 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren of North Carolina, and 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren of Louisiana; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, the late Ethel Kidd; his son, the late Alvin Linford Spurlin, Jr.; his parents, the late Johnny Linford Spurlin and Effie Dawn Starnes Spurlin, his brother, the late Jimmy Spurlin, and his niece, the late Joanna Spurlin. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him as “Fox,” his old CB handle name, and will be fondly remembered for booming voice and helpful disposition.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, at OUR LADY OF LOURDES CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2621 COLONIAL BLVD., in Violet, from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held in his memory at 1:00 PM. He will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery.
