He was born on July 30, 1941, in Eoline, Alabama. Billy was a basketball standout at Bibb County High School, graduating with the Class of 1960. He then served his country in the United States Air Force for over 4 years. Billy went to work for B.F. Goodrich in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1967 and was a loyal and dedicated employee for 37 years. He was a member of the Alabama Racking Horse Association for many years and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family showing his horses across Alabama and the southeast.
Billy is survived by his wife of 56 years, June Nichols Cox; his sister, Vernita Johnston of Centreville; his daughter, Jill McGee (Duane) of Centreville; his son, Joe Cox (Kelly) of Randolph; his granddaughter, Katie Smith (Edward) of Mountain Brook; his grandson, Jake Covington (Emma) of Baltimore, Maryland; great grandson, Ward Smith; sisters-in-law, Linda A. Cox and Tammy Nichols, and brothers-in-law, John Nichols and Pat Reilly. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and their families. Billy was preceded in death by his parents, H. M. "Goldie" Cox and Jessie Colburn Cox Yerby; his brother, Jesse "PeeWee" Cox; his sister, Joyce Reilly; sister-in-law, Frances Ingram; his brothers-in-law, Tommy Johnston and Thomas "Buddy" Ingram.
Pallbearers are nephews, Darron Cox, Russell Cox, Brandon Johnston, Brian Johnston, Kevin Nichols, Chad Nichols, and Ricky Reilly. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Hubbard, Bobby Hugh Lovelady, John Nichols, Earl Owens, and Freddie Shoults.
A graveside service for Billy will be held Friday, August 18, 2023 at 2:30 PM at Pineland Memorial Cemetery, 3472 Montgomery Highway, Centreville, Alabama. Bro. Ken Fuller will officiate.
