Dale was born in Dunnell, Minn., May 30, 1930, to Arthur and Tillie Steinhorst. He graduated in 1948 in Iowa, from Estherville High School.
He was enlisted in the Iowa National Guard when his unit was activated during the Korean War. A ceasefire was called before his unit could be sent to Korea, so Dale spent the rest of his enlistment in Germany.
After a brief period as a civilian, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Dale was soon stationed in England, where he met his wife of 56 years, Brenda. The couple married in Newbury, England July 16, 1960. During their married life, Dale and Brenda were stationed in Michigan, South Dakota, California and twice in England.
Dale was sent to Vietnam and served there from 1968 to 1969. He retired from the Air Force in 1976 as a senior master sergeant with 26 years of active service. The couple lived in Southern Oregon before moving to Lewis County, Wash., in 1991. Briefly residing in Glenoma, they bought a home near the Cispus Center, outside of Randle. They lived there for over 20 years, before relocating to Centralia in 2015, due to Dale’s health issues.
Dale is survived by his loving wife, Brenda; sons, Glenn (Wanda) Steinhorst of Centralia and Duane (Terri) Steinhorst of Eagle Point, Ore.; daughter, Charmaine (Ron) Stiles of Maitland, Fla.; brothers, Charles Steinhorst of Puyallup, Wash., and John Vandeventer of Iowa; and sister, Mary Ann Swanson of Iowa; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lyle; and a grandson, Ronnie.
Dale was a good, quiet and honorable man who enjoyed gardening, casinos and giving his opinion. Until his health prevented him from doing so, he enjoyed reading about all types of subjects and instilled a love of learning in all of his children. He and Brenda traveled a great deal, both during his military service and after retirement. Their travels took them not only across Europe but throughout the United States. They loved their home outside of Randle and were both amazed and entertained by all of the local wildlife.
The family would like to thank the staff of Providence Hospice and Catholic Community Services. A special thank you goes to caretakers, Cindee, Rainey, Elizabeth and Megan, the kindness and grace you showed our father during this time will never be forgotten. May God bless you all.
There will be a funeral service at Eagle Point Oregon National Cemetery, Monday, July 25, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. A memorial service for friends and family will be held in Washington, at a time and place to be announced later. In lieu of flowers the family requests that gifts be sent to St. Jude’s Research Hospital. “We will see you again, Pops.”
