Born November 21,1937, he was the eldest son of Francis and Catherine (LaCastro) DeCristoforo. A 1955 graduate of Old Saybrook High School Sal excelled in basketball, soccer and baseball. He was the first recipient of the Athlete of the Year award. He attended the University of Bridgeport on a full athletic scholarship.
In 1956 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps proudly serving for 2 years. Upon the retirement of his parents in the mid '60s, he continued operating Cristy’s Restaurant that his father founded in 1957, until its sale and Sal’s retirement in 2006.
He was an avid sports fan, especially the New York Yankees. Sports photos and memorabilia adorned Cristy's. He loved the theater attending many Broadway shows with friends and family. Some of his most enjoyable hours were spent hosting dinner parties at his home and Cristy's. While smoking a cigar, a glass of Dewars or Chianti he would share countless stories of his favorite Yankees and Knicks games, Broadway shows, trips to Italy and his early years working at Bill Hahn's Hotel. His favorite restaurant of over 50 years was Forlini’s in NYC’s Little Italy where he enjoyed taking many friends and family over the years.
He is survived by his brother James (Karen) DeCristoforo of Warren, OR and John (Deborah) DeCristoforo of Old Saybrook. A nephew Dan DeCristoforo of Old Saybrook, three nieces Kristine Nowak, Katherine Frare and Noelle Sisk all of Portland OR as well as six grand nieces and nephews. Per Sal’s request, there are no services.
