James Patrick McCauley, age 83, of Ivoryton, beloved husband of Judith L. McCauley, died peacefully on Sunday morning, January 15, 2023 at Aaron Manor in Chester, Connecticut, having succumbed to complications from dementia.
Jim grew up in Deep River attending Deep River Elementary and then Valley Regional High School, graduating in the class of 1957. Immediately after graduation, he began employment at UARCO in Deep River where he worked for several months. He then enlisted in the United States Army in October 1957 where he served as a finance clerk stationed in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was honorably discharged in 1960, when he returned to UARCO where he worked for 38 years.
Married in 1962 to his wife Judy, they settled into their community and raised two children.
"Jimmy" will be remembered for his wry smile, knowing chuckle and easy going demeanor. He was a humble man who knew few enemies. He did not suffer fools. He was handy and capable with an artistic and mechanical aptitude, which he displayed throughout his life. Many friends and family benefitted from his skilled use of a paint brush.
He was a baseball purist and fan of the Amazin' Mets. He would be crestfallen to have learned the National League adopted the DH. He was also a devoted UCONN Husky fan. He was an avid golfer who required strict adherence to the rules, both of himself and his competition. Paramount to him, however, was his interest in whatever sport any of his grandchildren were engaged in. He seldom missed one of their competitions.
He also coached youth baseball and women's softball. He likely left his biggest impression on the local youth as a little league umpire, most of whom remember him with fondness.
He was predeceased by his parents, Francis A. and Eleanor W. McCauley, and his only sibling, Francis B. McCauley. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two children and their spouses, Patrick and Suzanna McCauley of Essex and Kathleen and Donald Rankin of Ivoryton.
Additionally, he leaves behind his 4 beloved grandchildren; Brian and Brooke Rankin, and Michael and Anna McCauley, and his faithful dog, Mack.
Visitation will be held at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook on Friday, January 20, 2023 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 10:30AM at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, 14 Prospect Street in Essex. Burial will be privately held by the family in Resurrection Cemetery in Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity or non-profit of your choosing.
