Pat is survived by his wife Joan, his son Scott B. Tully and his wife Denise (Dee) of Clinton, his daughter Elizabeth A. Tully, also of Clinton, his grandsons Mitchell (Tesla) and Matthew (Nicole) Johnson, brother-in-law's Jeffrey Apicelli, James (Donna) Apicelli and Jay (Jena) Apicelli. Pat was predeceased by sister-in-law Judith Apicelli.
Born April 5, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA, Pat grew-up in Collingswood and Oaklyn, NJ. After graduating from Bishop Eustace Prepatory School in Pennsauken, NJ, Pat joined the United States Navy, volunteering for Submarine Duty. Upon graduation from United States Naval Submarine School in Groton, CT Pat served on the diesel-electric submarine USS Hardhead (SS-365) before being selected to serve aboard the nuclear submarine USS Triton (SSRN-586). While assigned to the Groton-based Triton, Pat met, fell in love with Joan.
Completing his military service, Pat and Joan married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in February 1963. Residing in Groton, Pat worked briefly at General Dynamics – Electric Boat, awaiting acceptance to the Connecticut State Police Training Academy. Having received his appointment and achieving his goal of becoming a State Trooper in 1964.
Pat was extremely proud to be a member of the State Police. In his 27 and a half years of service with the State Police, Pat ascended in rank, from Trooper to Lieutenant Colonel, serving as Resident State Trooper in Old Lyme, Commanding Officer of Troop F – Westbrook, temporarily Chief of Police for the Town of Stonington, CT, Commanding Officer of the State Police Training Academy, ultimately leading the Office of Field Operations. Early in this span of service, Pat attended the University of New Haven evening-division, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude earning both a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice (Law Enforcement Administration) from the University of New Haven. Following his graduate studies, he served UNH as an Adjunct Instructor, championing the concept of Community Policing.
Following his retirement from the State Police, Pat became Chief of Police for the City of Stamford in 1994 where he implemented Community Policing, concluding his career in 1998.
In retirement, Pat enjoyed racquetball, running, cycling and long walks. Pat found his greatest pleasure being with his best friend, Joan, and spending time with his children and grandsons.
Having a strong faith, Pat was a communicant at morning Mass at Saint John Catholic Church and Saint Mark Catholic Church, in Old Saybrook and Westbrook, respectively. He was also a member of the Eucharistic Perpetual Adorers at Saint Mark's.
On Sunday, August 25, relatives and friends of Pat are invited to the Robinson, Wright and Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street, Centerbrook, CT where Calling Hours will be from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.
A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 14 Prospect Street, Essex, CT at 11:00 AM on August 26.
Following the Funeral Mass, Joan, Scott and Elizabeth invite relatives and friends to join them for a celebration of Pat's life at the Clinton Country Club, Route 145, Clinton, CT.
