Father John L. McDermott, 71, died August 15, 2018 in Washington, D.C. Born Sept 29, 1946 Plainfield, NJ, son of the late John L. & Angela (Diebold) McDermott.Fr. John passed away on the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary, after a lengthy illness.John graduated from Georgetown University in Washington D.C. with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service, he then joined the United States Navy and graduated from Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School and was transferred to the Defense Intelligence Agency as the Country Officer for attaché offices in Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines. He received the Joint Chief of Staff Commendation Medal. After his military service he returned to Washington D.C. and graduated from Georgetown University Law School.Following law school he resided in Honolulu Hawaii from 1979 to 2007. He then moved to Connecticut to attend Holy Apostles College and Seminary to become a priest and a member of the Society of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 25th, 2015 at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury, Connecticut. In 2012 he wrote and published “How American Law Lost God.” He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He leaves behind his sister Joan and husband Gary Garrety, niece Donna Garrety, nephew Bryon Garrety and wife Betsy, Gary Garrety and wife Mary and nieces and nephews Bryon, Shannon, Tiera, Mailee, Remy and Isaiah. Visiting hours for Fr. John will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, 48 Middlesex Ave, Chester on Thursday, August 23rd from 5-7pm. Funeral Mass will follow on Friday at 11:30am
Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery with the rendering of full military honors. Arrangements by Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, Centerbrook.
