Donald D. MacDermid, 79, of Chester, Connecticut was born October 26, 1942, and passed away unexpectedly on October 11, 2022. He is survived by his long-time friend, Bruce McKee and his niece, Kimberley Megrath and nephews, Jon Schoonmaker, Brink Schoonmaker, and Robb Schoonmaker.
Donald was a graduate of The American School in Switzerland (TASIS), Class of 1961, Middlebury College, and Rhode Island School of Design. He loved his home with its unique Greek Revival architecture, and the Town of Chester. Donald was a world traveler and the consummate gentleman with a fashion style all his own. Art held a special place in his heart and his life. Donald had a dry wit, wonderful sense of humor, and was quick to share a laugh. He did not hesitate to voice his strong opinions. Donald never let his traumatic brain injury define him. He was thoughtful, a great listener, and always gave his full attention. He wasn’t afraid to show his emotions. Donald was a true friend. His idea of neat and tidy defied traditional norms. A day at home always included the TCM channel, and a day out was not complete without lunch at a local restaurant. There was a naivete that allowed Donald to extend kindness and compassion before judgment but could leave him vulnerable. Donald saw the humanity in people and the beauty in nature that never ceased to bring him great joy.
Donald’s life was greatly enriched by a dear friend, Sandra Bergeron, his patient, loving, kind, and trusted companion around town for 15 years. Sandra and Donald were so often seen together in the shoreline art galleries, museums, historical homes, and antique shops that when she was with her husband, he was often viewed with suspicion. Donald was also fortunate to have many life-long friends in New York City, Boston, London, and around the world. May they find peace and comfort in the decades of memories made together….”to live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die.”
Donald was predeceased by his father, Archibald J. MacDermid, his mother, Velma P. MacDermid, his sister, Jeanne Schoonmaker and brother, Archibald J. “Jock” MacDermid, Jr.
At Donald’s request, no services will be held. His ashes will be scattered on the campus of TASIS Switzerland near Lugano. To honor Donald’s life, donations may be made to the Donald D. MacDermid Endowment Fund for the Performing & Fine Arts at the TASIS Foundation, Inc., 107 S. West Street, Suite 957, Alexandria, VA 22314 -or- to the Chester Community Partnership Fund at the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, 49 Main Street. Middletown, CT 06457. Arrangements are in the care of The Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, Centerbrook, Connecticut.
