Carl E. Larson

Carl Edward Larson of Ellington passed away on August 23, 2024 at the age of 86 years old. Mr. Larson was born in Centerbrook, the son of Carl Elnar Larson and Ruth Cavanaugh Larson. A graduate of Valley Regional High School (’55), he later obtained his BA at Western Connecticut State University (’60) and an MA from Springfield College (’66).

Mr. Larson taught music in the Old Saybrook School System from 1960-63 and devoted the greater part of his professional life to serving children and adults with disabilities as Director of Camping and Recreation at Newington Children’s Hospital and with Easter Seal Societies in Florida, Georgia, and Connecticut. In 1990, he was named Facilities Manager with the Girl Scouts of Connecticut for whom he worked until his retirement in 2001.

An American Camping Association (ACA) Certified Camp Director, Mr Larson was integrally involved in its standard program. He was an ACA Standards Visitor for many years as well as president of the Connecticut Camping Association and board member of the New England Camping Association. He received the “Thanks Badge” from the Girl Scouts in 2001. Mr. Larson was an avid baseball/softball player and coach. In his later years, he enjoyed volunteering, playing cards, reading, listening to music, and rooting on his beloved Yankees and Huskies.

He will be greatly missed by his family. Besides his former wife, Elizabeth, children (David and Eric Larson, Heather Neisen), and grandchildren (Renee and Katie Larson and Cara and Max Neisen), he is survived by his brother (Craig) and his wife (Judy) and their children (Christa, Joanne, Cindy, and Jeffrey), as well as cousin Carol Lanier.

The family would like to thank the staff at Vernon Rehab and Healthcare Center for providing excellent care to Carl after he sustained a debilitating stroke until he peacefully came to rest.

Memorial services will be held on Friday September 27, 2024 at 11a.m. at the Robinson, Wright and Weymer Funeral Home at 34 Main St, Centerbrook, CT burial to follow at Centerbrook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Stroke Association at www.stroke.org.
