Arthur Solomon Meyers, a resident of Middletown, CT for more than two decades, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. He was born in New York, NY on December 14, 1937 to the late Nathan and Selma Meyers. He was the loving husband of the late Marcia Meyers and beloved father of Naomi Keenan (Patrick) and Ruth Meyers (Jeff Oathout). He was a doting grandfather to Stella, Darcy, and Francesca. A wonderful uncle and lifelong friend to many. His connections were far and wide. If you didn’t know him, your friends knew him. Rotary Club was one of many community organizations he enjoyed participating in every month.
Arthur was a veteran and spent his entire career as a librarian and Director at many libraries including New York, Detroit, Baltimore, St. Louis, Muncie, Hammond, and Middletown. He was known to be a wizard at obtaining grants for his libraries and was never shy in asking local and state politicians for more funding of the libraries.
The plaque in Russell Library sums up his impact: “During his tenure as Director of Russell Library, Arthur Meyers engaged the entire community. His special warmth encouraged diverse populations to connect and discuss issues in the Open Forum style e.g. where the goal was to raise the level of public discourse through the striking of mind upon mind. Art established local groups for discussions on a variety of subjects; many lives have been enriched through his efforts.” “His infectious spirit of volunteerism encouraged those with whom he came in contact to give back to our community in so many ways. A published author with a gentle smile and an inquisitive nature. Art is a special man, mentor, and role model. To be his friend is an honor. And he is a friend to all.”
Arthur believed passionately it was important to feed a person’s mind, body, and soul. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of the Russell Library, Amazing Grace Food Pantry in Middletown, or Rotary Club of Middletown.
Interment will lead off Arthur’s services on Sunday, May 28, 2023 at 1:00PM in the Beth Shalom section of the Fountain Hill Cemetery, 57 High Street, Deep River, CT.
