Stephen Curtis Kirby died following complications from degenerative bone disease last week in Denver, Colorado. He was 54 years old and finally free of the body that betrayed him – free to roam the mountains and rivers of his adopted state.
Steve was born and raised in Denton, Texas where his family were active members of First Christian Church. Steve attended Congress Junior High and Denton High School (Class of 1985), where he excelled athletically, especially in baseball, golf, and basketball. Friends made during these days remained a large part of Steve’s life and social circle.
Texas Tech University was Steve’s home during his undergraduate career. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the holy friendships made there will last forever. After earning a degree in Marketing, Steve attended the University of North Texas – completing a Master of Business Administration.
Steve entered the pharmaceutical industry with Parke-Davis and quickly rose through the ranks of their sales division. An advancement and merger with Pfizer Pharmaceutical re-located him to Denver, Colorado. Steve retired from Pfizer after two decades in the industry.
While in Colorado, Steve developed two life-long passions: snowboarding and fly-fishing. Always an outdoorsman, most weekends were spent with friends in the mountains and on the rivers of his new home. Everyone that knew Steve realized how special these places were to him.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Dorothy Kirby. He is survived by his sister, Susan Kirby McDaniel and niece, Megan McDaniel.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift in Steve’s name to the Denton Public Schools Foundation. A scholarship will be created to provide for Denton High School students attending Texas Tech.
