Shirley Ann Hughes who was loved and known by so many as “Mama Shirl”, departed this world and entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Shirley was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 22, 1930 to Mary Melissa and Gerald Clyde Houser. She adored her sister, Beverly Jo McWhorter (deceased) and her brother Gerald “Jerry” Richmond Houser (deceased). She always talked about the wonderful childhood they had. She told many funny stories about her family and how loving they were. Shirley married the love of her life, Thomas Clement Hughes, Jr. on February 25, 1951 in Denver, CO. She was the adoring mother to Michael Jonathon Hughes (deceased), Leslie Kay Hughes Gould (John), and Lisa Gay Hughes (deceased). She raised her children with love and devotion in Littleton, Colorado with her beloved husband Tom (deceased). She deeply loved her Son in-law, John. She was proud to have Rebecca Gould and Zachary & Hillari Gould as her bonus family and was the beloved “GG” to their children Paxtyn and Jace Gould.
As a Manager of the Coffee Shop and Sales Associate in various departments for JC Penney, Shirley was known for her strong work ethic and managerial skills. She was especially known for excellent customer service and her ability to make every customer feel special. Her hobbies included sewing, embroidery, creating beautiful and varied crafts and she was an awesome cook and baker. She was a talented and beautiful homemaker. She was most proud of leading her children, family members and many friends to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
She is survived by her daughter Leslie Kay Gould, her beloved nieces and nephews (Bob Jackson, Jim Jackson (Fiona), Laura Jaquess and her children Amanda (Blake & Dorian) and Matthew, Michelle Houser, Christina Williams (Chad Brooks, and daughter Andrea) Zachary & Hillari Gould, Rebecca Gould, Paxtyn and Jace Gould. Aside from the children she doted on, Shirley is also survived by her Sister in-law Barbara Houser, and many beloved cousins.
Services will be held at Olinger Chapel Hill 6601 S Colorado Blvd., Centennial, CO 80121 on Thursday, March 4, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Denver Rescue Mission (PO Box 5206, Denver, CO 80217), Samaritan’s Purse (PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607), and Fellowship Community Church (5206 Midland Dr., Midland, TX 79707) can be made in Shirley’s name.
