Richard was born in Flushing, New York on February 2, 1934. He grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey. He graduated from Bowdoin College (BS, Chemistry) in 1956. Richard married Janet Marie Catlin, August 10, 1957, a marriage that lasted 55 years. He attended medical school at the University of Rochester, New York, graduating in 1960. Surgical residency followed at CU Medical School in Denver, CO. Moving to Cheyenne, WY in 1968, Richard began his general surgery practice, practicing until 1994.
His professional accomplishments include: initiating the practice of Grand Rounds at the Cheyenne hospitals; beginning the Cheyenne medical residents’ rotation in conjunction with CU Medical School; being a founding director of the Wyoming Student Loan Corporation, serving on the board from 1980-1991; and serving as a long-time board member of the Wyoming Children’s Society. He and Janet started the Parkinson’s Support Group of Cheyenne, facilitating it for 11 years.
Richard will be remembered as a talented and compassionate surgeon, a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, nature photographer, woodworker and teller of puns and jokes. He was a long-time active member of First United Methodist Church in Cheyenne.
He is survived by his wife, Janet C. Loughry and his three children, David Loughry of Los Angeles, CA, Sara Kline (Peter) of Centennial, CO, Ruth Ann Loughry of Littleton, CO, grandchildren Peter A., Emily, and Henry Kline and sister-in-law Alice Loughry of Los Altos, CA.
Richard was preceded in death by parents James Kenneth and Anita W. Loughry, and brother Donald C. Loughry.
Memorial services will be held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Highlands Ranch, CO on Wednesday, January 23 at 11 a.m. with reception to follow.
