It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Raymond W. Near. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Ray passed away at his home, Red Mesa Ranch, in Littleton, CO surrounded by his family. He was born in Denver on Thanksgiving Day in 1929 and was proud to be a Colorado native.
Ray is survived by his wife, Doreen, who has been his companion, partner and inspiration for 36 years. He is also survived by his daughter, Alida, son-in-law Brian Pesch and beloved grandchildren Tessa Pesch Lifka and Alex Pesch. Ray was preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia and Delores, as well as his first wife, Agnes, the much-loved mother of Alida.
Along with his successful business career in the Denver area, Ray filled his life with family, friends, adventures and a joy for living. He touched the hearts of everyone he met with his kindness, his enthusiasm, and his contagious sense of humor. Few who heard Ray's wonderful laugh and saw his warm smile could ever forget it.
Born during the Great Depression, Ray faced challenges in his early life that would have been insurmountable for many. But his unbridled optimism and resilience led to a 70 year career in Colorado Real estate. In his professional life, Ray built, owned, and operated a variety of businesses, including restaurants, apartment buildings, movie theatres, and commericial centers. He was a visionary entrepreneur who helped shape the landscape and preserve the history of Colorado.
In the early 1970's, Ray purchased the property that was to become his permanent home - he called it Red Mesa Ranch. In the foothills near Denver, he turned "The Ranch" into a warm, welcoming home - a place of refuge and renewal for him, his family, and his friends. It was also a place where he enjoyed welcoming friends and guests with his special hospitality. Ray cherished his time at The Ranch, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the red rocks he loved.
In addition to building his successful real estate career, Ray was eager to try new activities. He was an enthusiastic horseman, alpine skier, golfer, tennis player and, later in life, a fly fisherman.
Always ready for a new adventure and with an irrepressible zest for life, Ray approached each day with a positive attitude and as an opportunity to work, to learn and to have fun.
Ray's passing is a great loss for all who knew him. He will be missed, but his spirit will live on in the memories, stories, and hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace knowing he was liked by everyone he met, loved by his friends, and cherished by his family.
A small private service will be held for close family.
A celebration of Ray’s life is being planned for the springtime, where new and old friends can come together to relive fond memories and pay tribute to him. As the date for the celebration of Ray’s life is not yet announced, it may be helpful to check back on the website periodically for updates. This can help ensure that everyone who wishes to attend has the opportunity to do so.
