Lois entered into this world on Jan 2, 1931, born to Viola and Lynwood Sauers in Denver, CO. She was the 5th child of 6 children, and grew up in Englewood, CO. She attended Catholic Schools graduating from St. Francis De Sales High School, which she never forgave her brother Bill for telling their parents to send her there. Some of her favorite childhood memories included running away from the next-door neighbor’s big bucket of snakes and sliding down a shingled roof with Barbara, that she paid for dearly with splinters on her behind. She started her first job at Woolworths in downtown Denver. She met Edward (Dean) Rogers roller skating and quickly fell in love. They were married on July 14,1951 and established their house in Englewood CO after a stint traveling the US with Dean’s National Guard assignments. She left her career to become a loving mother to 5 children and housewife. They moved to Greenwood Village where they lived there 44 years before moving onto their next home in Centennial, CO in 1999. As a mother, Lois involved her children in Blue Birds, Cub Scouts and 4-H. She became skilled at making Christmas Wreaths at McCoys, working with her childhood friend Barbara Spalding. She worked at DU Swimming Pool so her children could all learn to swim because she had a fear of water herself. Despite this, she did learn the front float and that was enough. As the children got older, she learned to decorate cakes which she had plenty of practice making her children’s wedding cakes and so much more. She co-owned a flower shop at 4995 S. Broadway where she made some beautiful arrangements. She liked crafts, all kinds, crossword and word search puzzles. Lois and Dean even made their children each a nativity set from ceramics as well as outdoor yard art that Lois painted. Dean and Lois bowled every Tuesday night for years, played cards with two Svigel families and at church, they later joined the Kilowatt 8’s Square Dance Club where they danced for many years. They also attended church at 1st Presbyterian Church of Englewood. After Dean joined Jesus, Lois started doing jigsaw puzzles and reconnected with some of her cousins, nieces and great nieces. They enjoyed going out to lunch a couple of times a month. Her great niece, Lynette Newman moved in to take care of her and soon her family became Lois’ family too. Lois loved playing with baby Harper, even pushing her around with her walker. She marveled at Lisa’s vault (private joke) and looked forward to lunch with Nick, even though she thought the restaurant needed redecorating…She had dementia, but she loved having a good time. Even, if she didn’t remember many things 30 minutes later, she lived for the moment. And boy did she have some good moments. Despite memory issues associated with dementia, she held onto the memory of ice cream from The Inside Scoop in downtown Littleton, a discovery last summer.
Lois is survived by her 5 children, Stuart (Joyce) Rogers, Debbie (Dick) Stevens, Gary (Karen) Rogers, Connie (Jerry) Gross, and Diana (Bob) Richards. She has 25 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Lynwood and Viola Sauers, her 5 brothers and sisters, Reynold (Ethel) Sauers, Thelma (Joe) Kempter, Alma (Bill) Bowman, Bill (Donna and Norma) Sauers, and infant Doris Sauers and beloved nephews and cousins and her best friend Barbara Spalding.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Lois’ honor to 1st Presbyterian Church of Englewood, 3500 S. Logan, Englewood, CO or online at 1stpresenglewood.org.
