He was born in November 1928 in Boulder, Colorado, the oldest of three boys of Laurence and Euginia DeMuth. In 1941, the family moved to San Antonio, TX, then to Dodge City, KS in 1943, Midland, TX in 1945, and finally back to Boulder, CO. He graduated from Boulder High School in 1947.
Larry went to college at CU, and enrolled in Law School while still an undergraduate. In 1951, at the end of his first year in law school, he received a bachelor's degree in economics and political science. He graduated from Colorado University Law School in 1953. While in college he was in the ROTC. A few months after graduation he had to report for active duty and then served in the Air Force’s Judge Advocate Corp. He was stationed in Albuquerque, NM where he met and married Evelyn Glasebrook in 1956. Upon completing active duty later that spring he returned to Denver and began law practice at Akolt, Turnquist, Shepard & Dick where he became a partner in 1961. In 1968, he became in-house counsel for Mtn States Telephone & Telegraph Co, and later became General Counsel and Secretary for US West. After the passing of his first wife he remarried in 1987 to Paula Phipps. Larry retired from US West in 1992.
Larry is remembered for his honesty, integrity, leadership and genuine interest in others. He was know as a giving mentor and served as a sounding board to many. His warm smile is missed at the senior living facility where he spent his final years.
He was actively involved in improving the Colorado judicial system and served on Colorado’s Commission on Uniform State Laws, the Board of the Colorado Judicial Institute, and the Colorado Supreme Court’s Judicial Advisory Committee. In addition, he served on the boards of the Emily Griffith Center and the CU Foundation.
He is preceded in death by his wives, and two brothers Alan and Lael.
Larry is survived by his three children Debbie, Laurence and Brant DeMuth, and two stepchildren Leigh and David Phipps, Tori Dutton and seven grandchildren.
