John D. Strain, M.D., Chair of Pediatric Radiology at Children’s Hospital of Colorado, died June 22 after a 15-month battle with esophageal cancer. He is survived by his wife of 26 years Julie, son J.J., 19, and twin sons James and Jonah, 16. A native of Denver, John was a highly-regarded athlete at George Washington High School before attending both Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma and the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado. He graduated in 1973 with a BS in chemistry and enrolled in the University of Colorado, School of Medicine, graduating in 1977. John spent 33-years practicing pediatric radiology at Children’s Hospital. He became Chief of the Division of Pediatric Radiology in the Department of Radiology, and Chair of Radiology in 1990, positions he held the rest of his career. In these roles, John built one of the top pediatric radiology teams in the country. At one time the only practicing pediatric radiologist at Children’s, John grew the section to a staff of 25. The wonderful camaraderie and loyalty of his team are a direct reflection of his strong leadership skills, compassion, and dedication. Academically, John authored or co-authored numerous papers, book chapters, and abstracts. He was also invited to give presentations at local, state, and national meetings throughout his tenure. In addition to serving on multiple committees of the national Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR), John had also held terms as President of the Medical Board at Children’s Hospital, President of the Colorado Radiological Society, and as President of the Society of Chairmen of Radiology in Children’s Hospitals. He has been recognized as “Teacher of the Year” by residents and “Faculty Member of the Year” by the radiology department. Last April he received Children’s Hospital highest honor, the “James E. Strain Award” (named for John’s father). And in May, John received the prestigious “Singleton/Taybi Award for Excellence in Education” from the Society of Pediatric Radiologists. John dedicated his professional life to providing the highest quality healthcare to children. Through his work building the radiology department at Children’s Hospital he magnified his contributions many times over. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence and compassion.
