He attended Cherry Creek High School in Greenwood Village, Colorado, from 1999-2003, where he lettered in football as well as track and field. As a junior in high school, John was offered numerous full-ride football scholarships. As a senior, he earned Second Team All-Colorado and First Team All-Centennial League honors. A SuperPrep preseason All-Midlands team member, he was also nominated for East-West All-America honors. John went on to play football at the University of Colorado and the University of Akron before finishing his Bachelors Degree from the University of Oklahoma. He went on to receive his Masters Degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
John worked in the financial and insurance business sector for some time before he found his calling being an educator and coach. He taught at Putnam City West High School in Oklahoma City and was a Varsity Assistant Football Coach. He then moved to be closer to home where he worked at Truman Primary Elementary School in Norman, Oklahoma, as a Physical Education Teacher while he coached football at Norman High School.
Family and friends were of the utmost importance to him as well, which helped him foster some of the most significant relationships in his life. Additionally, he enjoyed coaching and watching football, playing golf, fishing, and debating politics. His last eight years, John battled numerous health issues stemming from hereditary pancreatitis, and he relied on his faith and prayer to get him through; this included a personal relationship with God, with Whom John had many conversations throughout the day.
John was preceded in death by his brother Mike, 2007, and his father Rocky Sr., 2018.
John is survived by his Mother, Jane, his sister Elizabeth and brother-in-law Mike Luhring, and their children, Austin, Katie and Matt; brother, Rocky Jr., his wife Deidra, and their sons, Rocky III and Michael; Aunt Carrie Martin, and several cousins.
Thank you to all the friends and family who donated to John’s final expenses. A special thank you to Jennifer Whorton Hussmann for organizing the GoFundMe account for making all of this possible. We love and appreciate you all!
