George was born on 6/7/1955 in New York to Ralph and Catherine Voigt and grew up in Queens, NY. Throughout high school, George worked for his father’s HVAC repair and supply store and went to SUNY Utica to obtain an HVAC degree. He married Maria Lucrezio on 6/10/1978 and moved to Colorado later that summer (influenced by George’s love of John Denver and the pictures of the Rocky Mountains that his songs created in his mind). They started a family in 1983 with the birth of Jaclyn Ann on 6/4/1983 and Dallas George on 8/15/1985.
George spent his youth in the Christian Youth Brigade in New York and was called to attend seminary for a master’s degree in divinity. He graduated from Denver Seminary in 1983 and began a long tenure as Associate Pastor of Faith Community Fellowship.
George gave many sermons and was a man of faith, but daily, George did not speak often of his faith but acted it out through service to his community, family and friends.
As a pastor, George began volunteering as a police chaplain with the Aurora Police Department. This began his obsession with law enforcement, and he joined the Greenwood Village Police Department in 1997.
In 1985 George was diagnosed with Polycystic kidney disease. George continued to serve his community and God as the disease slowly progressed. In 1996 George was placed on the transplant list and received a perfect 6/6 HLA tissue match from an unrelated donor. George was only on the transplant list for less than 8 hours. George quickly recovered from his transplant and joined the Greenwood Village police department shortly after his recovery.
George’s career as a Police Officer was one of service and sacrifice. It would be impossible to list the lives saved, people helped or comforted or positively affected by George. Despite having to witness terrible things in that service to his community, George maintained a soft heart and that required a strength and courage that must be acknowledged.
On 4/6/2007, George married Sharla Saile in Centennial, CO.
After retirement in 2020, George and his wife Sharla moved to Crawford, Colorado and although retired George continued his life of service. He volunteered for the Crawford Fire Department and responded to every call day or night unless he was out of town. He also began seasonal employment at Crawford State Park as a Park Ranger. He was involved with his adopted church, Saddle Mountain Fellowship in Crawford. He loved his land; his tractor and all the friends he made in the short time he lived in this small town.
George enjoyed any activity outdoors; camping, four-wheeling and hunting trips with his good friends.
George is survived by wife Sharla, daughter Jaclyn Voigt, son Dallas Voigt (Mona), stepdaughter Amanda (Cody), brothers Glen and Paul, grandson Wyatt, nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Predeceased by his parents Ralph and Catherine and sister Karen.
George was a community man, and he would have been proud if that were how he was remembered. The hole he has left will be felt by many and is a testament to his life.
