Evelyn was born in Kansas City, Kansas on August 2, 1920 to Hattie and Edward Welty. As the youngest of five children, she enjoyed a special relationship with her brother and three sisters. After graduating from high school, she traveled to Northeastern Colorado to spend time with her older sister. It was there that she met her future husband, Delbert Stewart. Even though the times were economically difficult, they married in December of 1940. Delbert was eventually inducted into the United Stated Army Air Force and after the war was over, they settled in Fort Collins, Colorado, where Delbert attended Colorado State University. After college they moved to Denver where thy raised their two children, Karen and Dick.
Evelyn’s faith in her Christianity was a guiding principle of her life. She took pleasure in her many volunteer efforts and the social activities in her church. She was known as a terrific cook. Her cakes, cookies, and pies were especially appreciated at any gathering. Evelyn had a phenomenal memory, a strong engagement with the world around, and witty sense of humor.
Evelyn is survived by her children Karen Dick (Bob) of Santa Barbara, California, Richard Stewart of Denver; her grandchildren, Kevin (Jane) of Palo Alto, California and Kyle (Suzanne) of Los Altos, California; and her great grandchildren Shep, Payton, Carson, and Cole.
