Dorothy Marie Odom, 92, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado and formerly of Beaumont and Amarillo, Texas, peacefully passed away and went to her home in Heaven on June 7, 2015. She was born January 8, 1923 in Cumby, Texas to Robert and Cora Seale. Dorothy was the youngest of nine children; her parents and all siblings predeceased her.
Dorothy married Garland Odom on March 23, 1940 and they raised their family in Beaumont, Texas. Dorothy was preceded in death by her loving husband, Garland to whom she was married for 42 years before his death in 1981. She is also preceded in death by her son, Kenneth. Dorothy and Garland were active members of Lamar Baptist Church, charter members of Emmanuel Baptist Church and Highland Avenue Baptist Church in Beaumont. Garland was a Deacon and Dorothy a Sunday school teacher and member of the WMU.
Dorothy attended nursing school at Lamar University and worked as a Licensed Vocational Nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont from 1958 to 1981. She was a compassionate and caring person, who was often visited by former patients after they recovered.
After Garland’s death, Dorothy and two of her widowed sisters-in-law, Gladys Odom and Wanza Odom, enjoyed traveling, including several trips to the Cayman Islands.
Dorothy moved to Amarillo, Texas in 1987 to live close to her sister, Mildred. Dorothy, her sister and brother-in-law, enjoyed traveling to quite a few states. After Mildred passed away in 1998, Dorothy moved to Colorado to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Steve Evans. In 2000, Dorothy moved to Highlands Ranch, where she lived with Judy and Steve, until her death.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Judy Evans of Highlands Ranch, CO; Carolyn Reed of Lake Charles, LA and Mary Linker of Beaumont, TX. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren.
She was currently an active member of Arapahoe Road Baptist Church and very much enjoyed her Bible study class and going to lunch afterward church with her friends. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, quilting, working crossword puzzles and watching football. Dorothy’s entire life centered around her church, family and friends. She was known for her friendliness and helpfulness, and will be greatly missed by friends and her surviving family members.
Dorothy’s family would like to extend sincere admiration and appreciation to the members of Arapahoe Road Baptist Church for their many prayers, cards and visits during her illness and to the doctor, nurses, CNAs, Chaplain and volunteers at Porter Hospice, who took such great care of her for the two months prior to her death.
Services will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Arapahoe Road Baptist Church, 780 Arapahoe Road, Centennial, CO, with visitation the preceding evening from 5pm to 7pm at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary, 6601 S. Colorado Blvd., Centennial, CO. A viewing and graveside service will take place in Beaumont, Texas at 10:00 am on Tuesday, June 16, 2015.
