He was born in Carthage, South Dakota to Harry and Mary (Leighty) Anderson. He was one of four children: Glen (Marcia) Anderson of Ypsilanti, MI; Laura (Earl) Underwood, Jr. of Fremont, NE and Willard (Mary) (predeceased) Anderson of Lauderdale, MN.
Daniel spent his youth in Huron, SD graduating from Huron High School in 1957. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Huron College, his Master's Degree from University of South Dakota and his Doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado.
He taught high school and was a guidance director in Lane, SD and Rock Rapids, IA. He was also on the faculty of Waldorf Jr. College in Forrest City, IA.
He also owned a bowling lanes in Buffalo Center, IA.
In the early 1970s he moved to Lakewood, CO to begin his career as a Career Development Specialist at Red Rocks Community College. He felt this was his spiritual calling to guide students to their careers.
Daniel met his wife Suzanne at Red Rocks. He retired in 1996 and she retired in 2001.
During Daniel's growing up years, he was involved in bowling.
He set pins at the local bowling alley for many years while attending school. He bowled on leagues and accomplished two 300 (perfect) games. He was a national champion bowler. He also pitched a perfect ball game.
One of the great excitements of his life was riding Harley motorcycles for 50+ years. He owned many Harleys and loved to fit them with all the "bells and whistles." He and Suzanne made many rides around Colorado. He sold his last bike at 75 yrs. old.
Daniel's other accomplishment was his 50 years of fitness which included many years of running (40,000 miles per his extensive records).
Daniel was a perfectionist in his work and his home. His garage has garnered many compliments from those who have seen it.
He enjoyed taking care of his home and took pride in his well groomed yard.
He and Suzanne have enjoyed many pets over the years most recently Tessie, Miley and Charlie. He especially enjoyed their walks to the park even with his wheeled walker.
Daniel was devoted to his religion and even though he did not find a church home in later years, he contributed to various religious charities and organizations.
Daniel was diagnosed with a blood disorder in 2022 and it eventually advanced to acute myeloid leukemia. After a fall in February and time in the hospital, he and Suzanne made the decision to end all treatment due to his lack of quality of life.
He came home to hospice care and died at home with his wife and his pets. He was brave and always had a smile and a thank you to his hospice and caregiving "friends."
Suzanne is grateful to the Compassus Hospice Care Team and the round the clock caregivers from Anova Care.
