Al, or “Doodlebug” as he was known throughout childhood, was born on March 23, 1932 in Amarillo, Texas to Earl Poe and Freda Belle Manzella. He had two siblings, Vito John Charles Poe and Earline Bland. At the age of 16, Al began working as a plumber, which he continued until joining the military in 1951. During his time in the United States Navy, Al served during the Korean Conflict as a Commissaryman Seaman Apprentice from February 8, 1951 to February 28, 1954. He was awarded a National Service Medal, the Bronze Star, and a United Nations Service Medal.
Upon retiring from the Navy, Al began to work as a Barber until 1960 when he began ironworking, retiring in 1982. During that time, he married his love, Doris Marie Pritchett, on Feburary 9th, 1958. Over the years their family grew with the welcoming of their four children, nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Al had many different hobbies and interests throughout his life. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed square dancing, bowling, hunting, or spending time gardening. Over the years he was also a part of different organizations including holding the Vice Presidency of the Morrison Lion’s Club from 1985 to 1987 and serving as an Officer and Chaplain for the Disabled American Veterans from 1987 to 2002. Al had also moved around the country, first from his birthplace in Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and then finally to Littleton, Colorado.
Al will always be remembered as being a loving husband, dad, and grandpa. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Doris, and their children: Debra Jean Tribioli and husband, Brian (Lone Tree, Colorado); Salvatore Alan Wayne Poe and wife, Loretta (Littleton, Colorado); Karen Marie Gidcumb and husband, Vaughn (Fruita, Colorado); Kyla Jane Durbin and her husband, Tim (Castle Rock, Colorado). He is also missed and remembered by his sibling, Earline, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Jordan, Megan (of daughter Debra); Cora (of son Salvatore Alan); Aren and Melina (of daughter Karen); Kris, Caleb, and Shelbi (of daughter Kyla); Diego (of grandson Taylor); Ruby and Jerry (of granddaughter Melina); and Makyla (of grandson Kris); as well as several nieces and nephews.
A private family service was held for Al at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary on November 23, 2019.
The family requests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association be made in Al’s name in lieu of flowers.
