On September 22, 2024, Michael Joseph Dooley passed away at the age of seventy-six. Michael was a loving husband and father, a cherished brother, son, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend and an adored grandfather known as “Pop Pop” to his family. His community also knew him as “Coach” because of his deep roots at Mount Saint Joseph High School and Rolling Road Golf Club.
Michael was everything to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Nancy Dooley, his sister Anne Garrity (husband Arthur and their two children, Evelyn and Michael), his two children, Colleen Patterson and Kevin Dooley (wife Jennifer), and his five grandchildren Alexis Patterson, Andrew Patterson, Emma Dooley, James Dooley and Caroline Dooley. Pop Pop had a deep, abiding love for his family, and he took great joy in attending just about every sporting event and youth activity his children and grandchildren participated in during their childhood and young adult years. If he couldn’t attend, which was rare, he would always call his grandchildren afterward to get the scoop on the game or event.
Whether he was on the grounds of the Mt St Joseph campus or up at The Road golfing, “Coach” always made himself available for a conversation, to answer a question, to provide a swing tip, to share a laugh, or to help someone through an obstacle they were facing. Michael proudly served as the Varsity Head Coach of the Mt St Joseph High School Golf Team for the past 32 years while also participating on the school’s active Alumni Board Association. During his tenure, Michael coached, mentored, taught, and inspired thousands of Mount Men on the golf course, the driving range, and the hundreds of events he volunteered for through the Alumni Association. He was one of the most unselfish people you could meet.
Michael was born in Baltimore, MD, on August 2, 1948 and predeceased by his parents, Margaret DeBoy and Michael Cornelius Dooley. Michael was a hometown boy, a lifelong Arbutus resident. He attended Our Lady of Victory School, graduated from Mt St Joseph High School in 1966 and from Loyola College in 1970 with a degree in Accounting.
Michael worked in the accounting and finance field his entire professional life and served in the Army National Guard at Ft Meade, MD, from 1970-1976. Michael worked for Koppers Corporation, Davis Distributing, Crawford Slevin & Hicks, and Lucent Technologies, and for the last 20 years as Controller for Mechanical Sales, Inc. in Columbia, MD.
In addition to his day jobs, Michael was a compassionate leader who always cared about doing things the right way regardless of whether it led to a win or a loss. He saw each person as an individual for who they were and adjusted his leadership style based on what each person needed to succeed, not what he needed. He carried this vision with him in every facet of his life.
