On March 22, 2021, John Martin Roth Jr., age 74, passed away after a long struggle with many illnesses; Loving father of Amy Harper and her husband John, and Eric Flora; Cherished grandfather of Emily and Brad Harper; Also survived by his best friend and loving companion, his dog, Marvin; and by many other cousins but especially by his favorite cousin, Paul Grochmal, who he enjoyed smoking cigars with on the patio next to the firepit, attempting to solve the world’s problems. He was preceded in death by his parents, John M. Sr. and Helma F. (Nee Hudert) Roth.
John was a charter member and Past Grand Knight of the St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Knights of Columbus Council in Woodstock, MD. John was also a member and Past Faithful Navigator of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Fourth Degree Assembly in Catonsville, MD. John served in many capacities with the Knights of Columbus, including District Warden and District Deputy for the Maryland State Council from 2008 - 2012. John also taught 5th grade Religious Education at St. Alphonsus Rodriguez from 2012 until 2020.
John received his Bachelor and Master Degrees from Towson University. He worked for the Baltimore County Public School System for over 50 years starting out as a Geography Teacher then becoming a Guidance Counselor, retiring in June 2020 after several years at the Catonsville Center for Alternative Studies. He enjoyed traveling and visited many countries during the summer breaks from school. He was a fan of the Baltimore Ravens (season ticket holder) and Orioles, and enjoyed listening to Bluegrass music.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Sterling Ashton Schwab Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228, on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 from 3 to 5PM and 7 to 9PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, 11:00AM, St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Catholic Church, 10800 Old Court Road, Woodstock, MD 21163. Burial will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
