Hugh R. Williams, Sr., 93, of Baltimore, MD., passed on September 3rd at Spanish Oaks Hospice in Savannah, GA. Loving husband of the late Norma E. Williams, he is survived by two sons H. Robert Williams, Jr., and Eugene A. Williams, and daughter Deborah J. Williams, grandsons Jeremy Wilkins, Zachary Williams, and Wesley Grogg, and one great granddaughter Teigan Isabel Wilkins.
Hugh was born to Leonard and Clara (nee Merryman) Williams on April 30, 1920. He was a graduate of Polytechnic Institute (1938), served in the US Army during WWII and continued his service in the Army Reserve from 1946 until 1973, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He worked for Maryland Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., from 1946 until his retirement. He was a Mason (Washington Lodge #3 in Cockeysville) and member of the Boumi Temple (1980) in Baltimore, and served as the Director of the Pote’s Little Symphony for several years in the 1990’s. He loved music and played trombone with several bands including the “Sentimental Journey Band” and the “Tired Businessmen Jazz Band”, who entertained folks for years at the Dutch Mill, The Franklintown Inn, and the Mill Race Tavern.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Sterling Ashton Schwab Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Ave. Catonsville, MD 21228 on Saturday, September 14, 2013 from 3 to 5pm, where funeral services will begin at 4pm. Interment will be in Druid Ridge Cemetery, Pikesville, MD on Monday, September 16, 2013 at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children at Boumi Shriners 5050 King Avenue, Rosedale, MD 21237.
