Charles Wayne Maloney

Born Charles Wayne Atkins (Maloney) on June 5, 1945, at 10AM, in Washington D.C. “Charlie” Maloney passed away peacefully from a sudden onset of heart complications on August 12, 2024, 4PM, at his home in Catonsville, Maryland, where he resided for 30 years.

After the death of his 3rd wife, Patricia Mostad, he raised his son, Nick, as a single father along with help from his 1st wife, Karen Vleck. Charlie had a big heart, loyal to everyone, showcased by his well-recognized, warm and infectious laugh that could fill any size room with a joyful noise.

Survived by his son, Nicholas Maloney and daughter-in-law Jean-Kylie Maloney, his former wife and caregiver, Kristine Duba. Memories of Charlie will always remain in the hearts and minds of his loved family and friends.

Raised in Roanoke, Virginia, Charlie lived multiple lives ranging from his love for literature and guitars to becoming a world-renowned Gunsmith of M1 Garand and M14 National Match Rifles, and a fantastic, albeit sometimes overly dramatic, actor and director in the realm of theatre.

Charlie Maloney served on the USS Enterprise CVAN-65 in the Navy from 1965 to 1968 during the Vietnam war as a Third-Class Radioman, carrying top secret correspondence of varying security levels to and from sea and land.

As man of many talents, he received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Acting and a Master’s of Fine arts in Directing from Virginia Commonwealth University. By the time he retired in 2019 from acting and directing, Charlie had been involved in over 200 productions including both live theatre and independent films.

Former Radio Announcer for WPVR, FM and WLRJ, FM, Roanoke Virginia, Charlie would go on to study and perfect Gunsmithing, founding and operating his own private company, Gunning Arts in 1977. He traveled with the First Army Marksmanship Training Unit in 1982. Charlie apprenticed under the legendary Ray Parkinson who learned from John Garand and built an M1 Garand for Senator, John F. Kennedy. He was a valued employee for over a decade at Fulton Armory as Chief Gunsmith. After retiring from Gunsmithing in 2023, Charlie had serviced thousands of firearms.

All the memories that we all shared with him will be cherished. He was loved by so many and will be missed!

A memorial gathering for Charlie will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Sterling Ashton Schwab Witzke Funeral Home of Catonsville, Inc., 1630 Edmondson Ave, Catonsville, MD 21228.
