It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ann Jane “Nancy” Corbett on February 21, 2023 at Charlestown retirement Community, (Catonsville, MD) where she had been a longtime resident. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Lacey Odis Patrick Corbett, Jr. as well as Brother John Charles “Jack” Corbitt. She is survived by Brother Donald P. Corbitt, many loving nieces and nephews as well as several Corbett children.
Nancy was born on December 11, 1936 in Baltimore, MD to parents Mary Catherine (Smith) and Edward Lawrence Corbitt. She grew up in Irvington, a working class neighborhood with older brothers Jack and Donald. She attended grade school at St. Joseph’s Monastery in Irvington and from early childhood was well known for always being very “caring”, smart, friendly and athletic. She enjoyed basketball and played several years on the St. Joseph’s Monastery girls’ basketball team and was also team captain. Tremendous smarts and good grades helped her earn a full scholarship to an excellent prep school – Notre Dame of Maryland, where she was voted “The Blazer Girl”, an award given to an individual who best represented the “ideal student which Nancy certainly was.
Following high school and as a devout catholic Nancy entered the Bon Secours order of nursing nuns where she became a registered nurse, working long hours in several locations around the country. During that period Nancy was chosen to attend Catholic University in Washington D.C. where she received her B.S. degree in Science. After thirteen years of service and after much prayer and deliberation Nancy decided to leave the convent. Consistent with her lifelong desire to care for others she became a “visiting nurse” in the underserved communities of Baltimore City which she found to be especially rewarding.
Nancy would later move to Boston where she became a Psychiatric nurse in a VA hospital and there met Lacey Corbett, a Psychologist, whom she eventually married and became a step-mom to his six children. After receiving her master’s degree in clinical psychology from Boston University she joined Lacey in his clinical practice in the historic coastal town of Plymouth Mass.
Following many years working with husband Lacey they eventually decided to retire to Ocean Pines, Maryland where they purchased a beautiful home and where Nancy could be close to Brother Jack and other family members located in the Baltimore area.
Sadly, her beloved husband Lacey, “who was the love of her life”, passed away shortly after they moved to Ocean Pines. Nancy made “the best of things” while continuing to live there, joining the “swimmin women” swim group and singing with the “Pine Tones”, both senior programs in the community. When her older Brother Jack passed away, Nancy decided to move to the Charlestown retirement community in Catonsville, Maryland where she could be near oldest brother Donald, his wife Kitty, their children and other family and friends. Almost immediately she became an active member joining various groups (e.g. the singing harmonizers) and volunteering in various ways to support others in the community. She also maintained her devotion to the Catholic faith and was a regular at “Our Lady of the Angels” church located on the Charlestown campus where her favorite Pastor, Father Leo Larrivee presides.
Nancy lived a very full, active and successful life. One that reflected her deep religious values, her enduring commitment to caring for others, love of family and also a continuous desire for personal growth. Along with her two brothers she grew up in a single parent household with her Mom Mary who worked full time. By today’s standards they had a fairly modest upbringing with limited or no money for the “extras”. Yet, despite that she managed to excel both academically and professionally, attending two prestigious universities, eventually getting her master’s degree and then joining Lacey in his clinical practice. In her personal life she was a devoted wife to husband Lacey, a loving step-mom and grandmother and incredibly special Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, many of whom have fond and wonderful memories of their “Aunt Nance”.
Throughout her life Nancy travelled extensively to many different and unique locations both here in the U.S. and abroad. Most of these trips were with husband Lacey. She loved spending time tending to her gardens. The first one was in Ocean Pines designed as a memorial to Lacey and afterwards at her apartment at Charlestown where beautiful roses and a statue of the Virgin Mary were ever-present.
Nancy would never turn down a good cookie, her favorite donut with a hot cup of tea. She had a well-deserved reputation for spoiling her grandkids as well as her nieces and nephews. Throughout her life Nancy was always a calm, comforting and loving presence no matter the situation.
So now, with Nancy having passed away peacefully from this earth we entrust her care to the Lord Jesus and have no doubt that God will shower her with his benevolent, loving presence and kindness.
