Sandra Cooney King passed away June 25 at age 84 in the company of her two children, Jenny and Paul. Sandy was an avid artist and found an outlet for her Christian spirituality and love of nature through hundreds of paintings, often of birds and flowers. As a friendly person, she enjoyed meeting new people. Sandy liked singing, and in her early days would play the guitar. She was also a self-taught gourmet cook, which was much appreciated by her family.
Sandy lived for her last ten years at Brookside Inn, a skilled nursing community in Castle Rock, Colorado. There she was known for her artwork and spirited personality. A native of Connecticut, she worked for a time at Yale University where she met her husband Robert H. King (now divorced). While living in Greencastle, Indiana, she was a homemaker to her husband and two children while also pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Indiana State University. She moved with her family to Jackson, Mississippi, where she continued her passion for art. As a painter, she primarily worked in oils but occasionally used pastel, pencil and watercolor. During the last ten years, her paintings were done primarily in acrylic. Sandy held many art shows over the years, while also finding meaning in a spiritual journey as a devout Christian and an enthusiast of the Course in Miracles. While living in Castle Rock, Sandra had an affiliation with New Hope Presbyterian church.
In her final years, she often found her greatest joy in the cheerful innocence of birds, and for a time, had a bird feeder set up outside her window.
Sandra is preceded in death by both her parents (John and Frances Cooney) and her son, Bruce Harlan. Sandra is survived by her two children, Jennifer Rischling and Paul King, her former husband Robert King, and her three grandchildren Shaley German, Zayden German, and Mila King.
Private family services will be held.
