Robert Lawrence Pike was born January 20, 1934 to Lawrence and Alma Pike in Los Angeles, California, along with his younger brother Tom. Bob, as he preferred to be called, grew up and lived most of his 81 years in California. He went off to Colorado to attend CU Boulder where he met, fell in love, and married his first wife JoAnn Custer(sp). He returned to California to take over ownership and run his family’s business, Pike Trailer Company, founded in 1896 by Bob’s Great-Grandfather, George Pike. Bob and JoAnn had five children together, Steve, Carol, Chris, and twins Terry and Cindy.
Bob loved boating, flying, and traveling to many parts of the world on his own boats and even got himself into a little bit of trouble now and again while boating. He told many stories of his travels and stated that only “by the Grace of God” did he make it back from a couple of his solo trips. He had wonderful memories and made a few very good friends on his travels. One of his most favorite places to travel was France. He stated several times, if he only knew how to speak fluent French, he probably would have lived there. Paul and Yvonne Godfrey were two of the friends he made, and he spoke of them often. He loved his emails back and forth with Paul, and loved the eloquence with which Paul wrote.
Bob was a very generous, kind-hearted man, not afraid to speak his mind, and loved his family and his wife Mary very much. Both he and Mary tended to be a bit reclusive, or shall we say just enjoying their quiet time together and loving it. Their children loved to spend time with them and when occasions arose that got them there, their presence was so enjoyed. Bob and Mary moved to Castle Rock, Colorado, full-time a few years ago after going back and forth between Castle Rock and Newport Beach for many, many years. He couldn’t give up the ocean at first, but then fell in love with the small town feel of Castle Rock.
Bob leaves behind Mary, his best friend of 40 years and wife of 20 years/2months, not enough they both have said. He leaves four children and their spouses and children. Carol and Scott Peck, and Carol’s sons Spencer and his wife Lauren, and Parker; Chris and Kimbra Pike, and their two daughters Neema and Kayla; Terry and Lisa Pike and their son John, and Terry’s children Chelsea, Stephen, and Hannah; Cindy Buchanan and her three sons, Frank, Grant, and Blake. Bob’s son Steve left this earth much too soon in his early 20’s. He also leaves behind a step-daughter and her husband Cindy and David Russell (Bob also referred to David as his friend besides son-in-law), step-granddaughter Shannan Russell Clarkin and her husband Hoss, and step-great-granddaughter Brianna; Step-grandsons Joshua and his wife Ariel, and great-grandson Titus; Andrew and his wife Alexis, and great-grandson Luke; and step-grandson Patrick.
Bob will be missed greatly by all those who loved him. We all wanted another 81 years with him, but he and God must have made plans for something greater.
So Bob, until we see you again, you will always have our hearts.
