Randy Len Hiler

Randy Len Hiler, 69, passed away after a long illness on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 in Castle Rock, CO.

Randy was born in Denver, Colorado on January 7, 1953. He graduated from Denver Lutheran High School in 1975. He graduated from the University of Colorado-Denver with a degree in Economics/Teaching. Later in his career, Randy earned a Master’s degree and became a school administrator.

Randy was a proud Colorado native and a lifetime educator. He began his social studies teaching career at Central Catholic High School in Denver. He also taught in Limon, Platte Canyon, and Elizabeth. He served as an assistant principal at Trinidad Junior High and Parker Vista West in Douglas County. He became a principal at Ellicott High School in 1999. In 2001, his high school building was destroyed by a tornado, making for a very challenging year. Randy followed his sports passion by serving as an assistant football coach in Limon. He was head football coach in Platte Canyon and Elizabeth; leading the Elizabeth Cardinals to 2 state playoff appearances. He was head girls/boys track coach at Elizabeth with a highlight coaching a state champion in high jump. He also coached wrestling, baseball and basketball at the various schools.

Randy met his future wife in Limon. He married LuAnn Loos on August 1, 1987 at Zion Congregational Church in Sterling, Colorado. Many remember this occasion as one of the hottest days in a church, since the church did not have air conditioning at the time!

Randy was a man of many interests. One of his families’ main interests were the Denver Broncos. Randy and his dad attended many games in good times and bad. In 1977, Randy became a season ticket holder. He enjoyed (most seasons!) the Colorado Rockies and CU Buffs. He also loved pets, gardening, Colorado history, politics, Christmas decorating and entertaining, traveling, reading, coin collecting and ghost hunting.

Randy was an active outdoorsman and developed an interest at an early age in fishing, hunting and hiking. His family had good times in the mountains and even built a cabin together in Leadville. They also loved visiting Central City and Cripple Creek in hopes of hitting the big jackpot.

Randy loved talking about all of his interests and would always be happy to share humorous accounts of his trips to Bullhead City, Arizona with his mom and aunts, his wheat harvest employment, a side gig as a radio disc jockey at KLIM AM, Limon radio, travel adventures and many others. If you needed a Hallmark Christmas movie recommendation- he was your guy. Randy was a devoted son, husband and friend.

During his retirement, Randy volunteered at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. He managed to not bring home every animal there, which a was an amazing feat. He also served on the Clear Sky Elementary School Accountability Committee and co-chair of the Friends of Fort Logan Field Officers Quarters Museum. He was a longtime member of the United Church of Christ Parker Hilltop in Parker.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, Lenn and Billie (Willa) Hiler; brother William Walter and sister Rhonda Sue and sister-in law Jane Henderer and special pets- Pam, Jody and Mandee.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, LuAnn, sister-in-law Judy Little (Odd) of Longmont, Colorado, brother-in-law Russ Henderer (Sandy) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, brother-in-law Todd Thompson of Genoa, Colorado. Nephews Garson Thompson (Elisha, Sage, Hudson) of Genoa, Colorado, Tarek Thompson (Jessica), San Angelo, Texas; numerous cousins from the Broomfield, Colorado area and his beloved dog Jynx.
