Mary “Doreen” Nicholas, age 87, of Cheyenne, WY and Castle Rock, CO, passed away on October 11, 2023. She was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, graduated high school from Mount Saint Vincent Academy in Halifax, Nova Scotia and completed her nursing degree from St. Martha’s School of Nursing in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Doreen was always up for adventure, so in that spirit, she and her best friend, Pauline, set off to the United States for their nursing residency program in Albuquerque, NM. From there, Doreen began her long and beloved career as a registered nurse in Cheyenne, WY, working at Memorial Hospital/DePaul Hospital as a charge nurse in the telemetry/cardiac unit until retirement. It was in Cheyenne she met and married Charles “Chuck” or Nicholas “Nick” where they made their home. Doreen was very proud of studying to receive her U.S. citizenship, but Canada always evoked fond memories.
Doreen was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed time with her grandkids, keeping up with them every step of the way. She was an amazing nurse, adept at her craft, and brought brightness, comfort and cheer to her patients, coworkers and anyone in her path. In her free time she enjoyed the arts. Her favorite play was Phantom of the Opera but she appreciated all theater and dance. Music was also a passion of hers, enjoying an eclectic range and always marveling at those who had the special gift of song and dance. She was up for any type of shenanigans, including gambling in Central City and Las Vegas as well as sneaking off for a solo snow skiing adventure. Warm beaches and swimming were right up her alley as well.
Doreen was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Nicholas, and brother William Taylor. She is survived by her four children (Bea Nicholas, David Nicholas, Kathleen Rogerson, Ann Nicholas), four grandchildren (Christian Rogerson, Paige Nicholas, Sebastian Rogerson, Ethan Nicholas), and brother James Taylor.
