Ken was born on November 24, 1941 in Denver, Colorado, to Kenneth Keene Sr. and Sylvia Bascue. He attended Jefferson High School in Edgewater, Colorado. Ken was an active high school student participating in nearly every club and sport offered. Most notably, he was captain of the football team, a member of the student council and head boy. He graduated in 1960 and maintained lifelong friendships with many of his peers.
Ken was a hard worker from an early age. He often spoke of the early mornings he would spend making donuts while working at the Pastry Delight Bakery in Edgewater, Colorado before school, hauling hod for his father’s masonry business and hitchhiking to and from his summer job at a pea cannery in Oregon. Ken put himself through college and graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1965 with a degree in history and earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Wyoming in 1970.
After graduation, he worked for various Denver law firms before being appointed to the Denver District Attorney’s office as a Deputy DA in 1972. Ken left the District Attorney’s office to open his own practice and eventually became a partner in the law firm of Keene, Munsinger and Stuckey. He was a trial attorney whose practice primarily focused on criminal, civil and domestic cases. Ken was a practicing attorney in Denver for 46 years.
When Ken wasn’t working, he loved to fish and would go as often as possible, enjoying long days on the water with his friends and sons-in-law, sometimes traveling up to 300 miles in one day for these adventures.
He also had a passion for travel. Ken and his wife Sheryl had the opportunity to visit most of the United States and many destinations in Mexico, South America and the Caribbean. When he wasn’t planning his own trip, he was equally excited to hear about the travels of friends and family.
Ken was a grandfather to nine grandchildren. He and Sheryl would spend most weekends attending swim meets, horse riding events, baseball, softball, basketball, football and soccer games. Summers were spent playing volleyball and eating popsicles with his grandchildren in the pool and barbequing while he played cribbage with his sons-in-law and grandchildren. Ken particularly enjoyed the tradition of the annual Christmas Eve celebration at his home with all of his children and their families.
Ken is preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Keene Sr., mother, Sylvia Bascue, stepmother, Pauline Keene and brother, Gary Keene.
Ken is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sheryl Keene, daughters Tammi Sattler and Stacey Webster, step-daughters Trina Seebach and Laura Knox and grandchildren Holly Knox, Shelby Covington, Nicholas Webster, Zachary Sattler, Madison Webster, Meghan Seebach, Katlynn Webster, Tate Sattler and Stephany Knox.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Peace with Christ Lutheran Church located at 3290 South Tower Road in Aurora, Colorado. Arrangements are by Olinger, Andrews, Caldwell, Gibson Chapel.
