Joan McDowell Barnett was born February 15, 1926, in Omaha and died September 29, 2016, at her residence in Castle Rock, Colorado. She is survived by three daughters, Linda Jo Simmons of Denver CO; Cynthia Sue Hansen of Larkspur CO; Maureen Kay von Tongeln of Parker CO; six grandchildren and two great granddaughters.
Joan attended Central High School in Omaha, graduated valedictorian, and was elected Miss Central her senior year. She attended the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and joined Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. During her 20-year career at J.C Penney’s, she advanced to Regional Manager, traveled extensively, and made long-lasting friendships. After retirement in Denver, Joan volunteered for the Denver Zoo, Colorado Public Radio, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The Museum gratefully acknowledged Joan’s twenty-five years of service. She was also an active member at First Plymouth Congregational Church.
Joan truly lived life to the fullest through many simple interests including watching baseball, playing cards, reading and fashion. Her vibrant, quick-witted intelligence and outgoing personality brought laughter to all she touched in the course of her long life. Joan’s loving and generous presence will be sorely missed by her family and friends.
