Jack was born June 25, 1936, to Lewis and Leona Pinney and raised with his older sister Mary Jane in the small farming town of St Anthony ID. It was here in the shadows of the Teton Mountains where he helped form a high school ski racing team and continued his love of skiing throughout his life. He married his high school sweetheart Erna Lee Atchley where they happen to have been from rivaling South and North Fremont high schools, but that couldn't keep them apart. He listed in the army and served as a reservist for eight years. He graduated college from Idaho State university with a degree in geology where he discovered a keen interest in rocks and minerals, which could explain his career path that started with a large mining company and eventually as a business owner of Arrow Concrete Sawing and then All West Surface Prep. For the last 17 years of his life, he even worked for the company that he built and then sold. Retirement was always “maybe next year,” but he stayed because he loved it along with all the customers that he took care of.
Jack and Erna Lee were married in a Chapel in the potato farming town of Ashton Idaho in 1956. Five years later Kelly Lynn was born July 21st, 1961, in St. Paul MN. They eventually settled in Colorado where Jack and his daughter together discovered a love of horses. They spent countless hours riding their horses together and traveling to local equestrian events.
Jack was energetic, loved life and the adventure of travel, meeting new people, experiencing interesting cuisine and being on the go. He and Lee traveled extensively throughout their marriage, both regionally and internationally. A couple of years ago he took the family to Idaho where they are both from for a journey down memory lane where we got to see firsthand where this love affair all began, from their hangouts, they're swimming hole, places they spent time, the church where they were married. It was truly special and the new memories we made as a family will be cherished forever.
Jack was an enthusiastic storyteller, incredibly detailed, funny, and charismatic and would have us all on the edge of our seats. There was never a time that Jack could not walk into a restaurant anywhere in Denver and not make a friend. He would recognize someone at the next table, and you would witness one of those lifelong relationships being nurtured with a handshake, a memory, a laugh. Grandpa Jack was the pillar of our family, and we are eternally grateful for the lessons he gave to us all. Jack will be incredibly missed by his loving family and his amazing lifetime friends that he so easily made throughout his life’s journey.
Jack is survived by his wife (Erna Lee Pinney), his daughter and spouse (Kelly and Robert Keyes), his three grandchildren and spouses (Crystal and Cori White), (Zach and Jeanette Drake), and (Logan Schaefer), and his four great grandchildren Aysia, Zacharyah, Bella, and Zoey. He considered others to be his family particularly the Reiter family (Jeanelle, Cameron, Mikayla and Ella) whom he loved dearly.
A Memorial and Celebration of Life to honor Jack will be held Saturday, March 12th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at The Millhouse at Phillip S. Miller Park, 1375 West Plum Creek Parkway, Castle Rock, CO 80109. Please join us in your casual attire as Grandpa Jack wouldn't want anyone “to make a fuss.” Childcare will not be provided during the Memorial or Celebration of Life.
