Gary was born in Greeley CO on June 6, 1940. His parents, Victor Arnold and Vera Lavone (she went by Lavone) owned a music store. Lavone played piano for a silent movie theater and gave lessons. Victor was a Master Sergeant in the Army until his death when Gary was just 15 years old.
He graduated from Cherry Creek high school and attended Colorado School of Mines for 1 year.
Gary married the love of his life on Oct 3, 1959 in Englewood CO. He worked at as an encyclopedia salesman when his children were born: Tammy, Dennis and Vicki.
He held many jobs over the years and tried his hand at starting several businesses: a grocery delivery service, chimney sweeping and a car stereo installation business. He was an extraordinary salesman and won several awards for sales. He finally found his home with American Family Insurance as one of the top agents in his district. He spent over 20 years with the company and was very happy there.
Gary loved fishing. Every fishing magazine, show, product…. Anything that had to do with fishing, he was there. He went on many fishing excursions to Mexico, Lake Powell, Chatfield and even salmon fishing in Alaska. He had several boats over the years and was always looking for the next opportunity to put a line in the water.
Every condolence I read for my dad mentioned his laughter. He was always happy and loved interacting with people. He was very extroverted and got fully involved in anything he was asked to do. He dressed up and participated in one of his granddaughters’ ballet performances. Dressed up for every Halloween and loved keeping count of the “trick or treaters.”
His dementia over the last 6 years may have stolen a lot from him, but it never took his joy. He was happy wherever he was and made everyone around him have a better day.
Gary is survived by his wife Marali, his children Tammy, Dennis and Vicki. He has 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Gary is also survived by his older brother Vic.
He is pre-deceased by his mother and father, his brother Stephen and his cherished Aunt Alice.
Three words to sum up my dad are jovial, kind and generous.
