The Reverend Delbert Avery Andrews, age 85, passed away in Lakewood, Colorado on, June 28, 2011. He was born in Gunnison, Colorado to Herbert Andrews and Helen Avery Andrews. Delbert served in the United States Navy during World War II, 1944-1946, and Korea, 1951-1952. He attended Western State College before working for Public Service Company of Colorado for 25 years. He graduated from the Episcopal Bishop’s School of Theology in the Diocese of Colorado and was ordained Priest in 1971. After several other churches in Colorado, he served at St. Philip in the Field in Sedalia, Colorado from 1977 to 1992, becoming their first Rector. Delbert was married to Elsa Choate Andrews from 1950 until her death in 1978. He was then married to Patricia Doyle Andrews from 1983 until his death. Father Del was a kind, gentle, loving man with a delightful sense of humor. Following retirement, he pursued hobbies of wood carving, reading and traveling. He and Patricia visited many countries overseas and toured the United States and Canada in their 5th wheel trailer, settling in Benson, Arizona, their home since 1993.
Delbert is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Linda Grace MacGregor, Lyric McKnight, Mark Andrews, and Anita Piekarski; grandchildren, Andrew (Staci) MacGregor, Elizabeth McKnight, and Abel Piekarski; stepchildren, Scott (Carolyn) Pieper and Krisanne Pieper; step-granddaughter, Elizabeth (Manuel) Cabello and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William and Frank and sister, Grace Mary.
A memorial celebration of his life will be on Monday, July 25 at 11:00 AM at St. Philip in the Field Episcopal Church, 397 South Perry Park Road, Sedalia, Colorado 80135. Another service will be held in Benson, Arizona in October.
Memorial contributions may be made in Del’s name to St. Raphael’s Building Fund, 181 Union Street, Benson, Arizona 85602.
