Bill was born in Kinston, NC to the late Lola Griffin and Leslie A. Taylor. During his high school years, the Taylor family moved to Cary, where Bill was a 3-sport All Conference athlete as both a Junior and Senior. He was a charter member of the Cary High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Upon graduating from Cary Sr. High School, he attended UNC-Chapel Hill on a Baseball Grant-In-Aid where he was part of the undefeated 1964 ACC Champion team coached by Walter Rabb. Bill also played 2 years of basketball at UNC, one on the freshman team and one season under Coach Dean Smith. After college, he pursued tryout offers with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies. Bill then served two years in the Vietnam War and received an Honorable Discharge.
Bill enjoyed a successful career as a homebuilder. He was Vice President of L.A. Taylor Building Company from 1972-1990, was President of the Cary Chamber of Commerce in 1979, and President of the Raleigh-Wake County Home Builders Association in 1980. In 1984 he received the NC Distinguished Service Award from Lt. Governor James Green. He went on to be Regional Vice President for Carolina Model Home Corporation and, later in life, served as Managing Partner of Taylor Family Investments.
Bill spent most of his free time on the golf course and was a long-time member of MacGregor Downs CC and The Country Club of the Crystal Coast. He enjoyed spending time with his wife and family, supporting UNC athletics, and vacationing with friends in Pine Knoll Shores.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a sister, Donna G. Taylor.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years Joy Payne Taylor of Cary; son, Jason & wife, Melisa Cahnmann-Taylor of Athens, GA; daughter, Morgan & husband, Keith Harrington of Charlottesville, VA; sister, Angela T. Pace of Cary; nieces, Alicia Pace of Austin, TX, and Alex & husband, Jimmy Kelly of Asheville; grandson, Oren and granddaughters Ryleigh, Liya, and Kendall.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at First United Methodist Church, Cary on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1:00 pm; reception immediately following in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill’s memory may be made to Veterans’ groups or cancer research organizations.
