He is survived by his wife, Linda Hickman; son, Josh Hickman and wife, Lauren; grandchildren, Alora and Charlie Hickman; stepmother, Doris Hickman; and sisters, Holly Converse and Merry Barnett.
He was born in West Orange, NJ August 17, 1942 and grew up in Florham Park, NJ. He attended William and Mary and graduated from Earlham College with a degree in history. He received a law degree from Golden Gate University.
He served in the U.S. Army as an Infantry officer with the 9th Division in Vietnam, with a Psychological Operations unit at Ft. Bragg and as a member of the Army Reserve. He retired as a Lt. Col.
He practiced law in California and was also an attorney with the Veterans’ Administration in Washington D.C.
He was an avid sports fan, particularly of football and basketball, a lover of music, gardening, cooking and history. He was a poet and songwriter. He was a generous, interesting man with a questioning mind, a unique way of looking at things and a lover of vigorous debate.

A memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
