Wayne was born December 21, 1960 in Smithfield, a son of Bobby John and Emma Rollins Jernigan. He married Susan Robinson on October 11, 1986 at White Plains United Methodist Church in Cary, NC.
Surviving are his wife, Susan Jernigan of Apex; son, Michael Jernigan of Apex; daughter, April (and husband, William "Ren") Russell III of Apex; grandchildren, Holden and Hadley Russell; his mother, Emma Johnson of Selma; his father, Bobby John Jernigan of Smithfield; brothers, Bobby John Jernigan Jr. and Tim Jernigan both of Smithfield, Alan (and wife, Dana) of Selma; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Wayne grew up farming in Smithfield and graduated from South Johnston High School in 1979. He made a career as a commercial door installer for Martin Architectural of Cary, NC for over 20 years. He retired in early 2014 to pursue other adventures. Wayne was a devoted husband and father. Friends would likely see him fishing at Jordan Lake with Susan and Michael or cheering on April every Friday night at Wake County Speedway. Wayne also enjoyed gardening and riding tractors and ATVs. He was immensely proud of his family and valued sharing life experiences with his children and grandchildren, which often meant spontaneous road trips with no agenda that could last weeks and could end up anywhere.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.
Online condolences may be sent to the family through www.brownwynnecary.com.
