Born in Lyallpur, India on July 27, 1933, he was the seventh of nine children of Bhagat Singh and Vidya Vati. He received his Civil Engineering degree from Banaras Hindu University. He then lived in Germany and worked in industry for six years before moving to the United States in 1964 to attend graduate school at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where he received his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering. While at Northwestern, he started his beloved family with his wife, Vera, and his two daughters, Mina and Indu.
The family moved to Clemson, SC in 1972 where Subhash joined the Civil Engineering department at Clemson University. He taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses and was principal advisor for several Masters and Ph.D. students. He received several prestigious awards, including the Quattlebaum Faculty Achievement award from Clemson University and a Fulbright award to teach in Uruguay. His research work was funded by various local and national agencies, including the National Science Foundation, and published in prestigious engineering journals. He retired from the University in 2006.
Subhash had many interests and passions. He was a lifelong tennis player and played daily. He instilled a love of the game in his family and all four of them could frequently be found on the courts. He was an avid traveler. He and Vera enjoyed exploring all parts of the world and learning about the history and culture of different places through their architecture, art and natural spaces. He loved photography and was frequently found with his eye behind the lens of his camcorder. But his greatest passion was spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed being at every milestone in their lives, both big and small, in addition to regularly spending time with them in between all the milestone moments.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Vera Anand, his daughter Mina Harris and husband Shawn of Cary, NC, his daughter Indu Ladd and husband Andrew of Atlanta, GA and his beloved grandchildren: Rachel Harris of Seattle, WA, Nathan Harris and wife Brooke of Mount Pleasant, SC and Lily Ladd of Atlanta, GA.
