Roy A. Watson, Jr., 90, passed away on January 29, 2014 at William M. Dunlap Center for Caring Hospice Home in Raleigh. He was born in Zebulon, NC on May 20, 1923. He was the husband of the late Carol H. Watson.
He is survived by his daughter, Anne and her husband, Harold of Cary; 3 grandsons, Brad Ballou, Brandon Payne and Chris Payne; and one great granddaughter. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one brother, Roland H. Watson.
After receiving training at Great Lakes, IL in 1942, he was assigned by the US Navy as an Aircraft Radioman. He served 32 months in the Pacific Theater during WWII and was discharged in June 1946 as a Petty Officer First Class.
Roy returned to Raleigh and assumed his prewar occupation as a Typographer, working at several commercial printing companies, The Raleigh Times and The News and Observer for 45 years before retiring. After retirement, he served as a volunteer at Rex Hospital for 16 years.
Roy was a longtime member of Westover United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities including Youth and Adult Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Building Committee Chair.
A funeral service will be held 2:00pm Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Westover United Methodist Church in Raleigh. Burial will follow at Montlawn Memorial Park in Raleigh.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
