Robert W. "Doc" Procter

During his 14 years as a Cary resident, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He participated in Charley Mann Reflection Sunday school, and organized the Name Tag Ministry. As an active tennis player, Doc joined Raleigh Racquet Club, inspired by his daughter, Becky. Recently in honor of his Army WWII service (1942-1946), Doc experienced the Flight of Honor to Washington, DC.

Doc was a man of many interests. His special hobbies were golfing, bowling, fishing, both ballroom and square dancing, barber shop quartet, scouting, (obtaining the rank of Eagle and being a Scoutmaster), men’s card group, writing poetry and his autobiography. When his children and grandchildren were together with him, they played family games with endless laughter.

Doc was loved for his enthusiastic view of life, always bringing out the best in others. He had a great sense of humor, honesty and reverence for God. Doc was born in Cleveland Heights, OH. He graduated from the University of Michigan, worked as an engineer in Detroit, MI, married Betsy on December 28, 1940. When they moved to Scotia, NY as a family, he was hired at Union College with the Character Research Project where he traveled much of the USA. Doc owned a beach home on Atlantic Beach, NC where his family and friends enjoyed shells, surf and sun.

Doc started working (1982) for the Atlantic Beach Police Department and retired at age 85. Doc and Betsy relocated to Sun City Center, FL enjoying golf cart rides, church yard sales, pool exercises, tennis and life was always getting better.

Doc is survived by his three children, Bob of Sarasota, FL, Bette of Pulaski, NY and Becky of Cary, NC; two grandchildren, Shawn and Bobby; five great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter.

In addition to his beloved wife of 71 years, Doc was preceded in death by his parents, Grace and Robert Procter; two sisters, Grace Ideson and Jane Bebber; and first great grandchild, Amy Harrison.

Bob, Bette and Becky will receive guests from 1pm-3pm on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511.

A celebration of Doc’s life will be held 2pm Saturday, February 14, 2015 at First United Methodist Church, 117 S. Academy Street, Cary, NC 27511. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Fellowship Hall.

A second service will be held 2 pm Sunday, February 15, 2015 at Broad Creek United Methodist Church, 562 Broad Creek Loop Road, Newport, NC with the Rev. Wade Nelms officiating.

Doc will be inurned with his wife, Betsy, at a later date at the family site in Kinston, NC.
