Our mother, Pauline Carroll Campbell, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 2, 2023, at Bella Rose Nursing Home in Garner, NC. She was born in Echo, Pennsylvania on April 2, 1928. Her parents, Patrick James and Pauline Carroll later moved to Conway, Pennsylvania where she grew up and met our father. She had five brothers, Charles, Edward, Dennis, Robert and Arthur. She adored her brothers and was so proud of their service to our Country.
She graduated from Ambridge High School in 1946 and worked for Bell Telephone as a telephone operator. She met our father, Hershel Glenn Campbell, who served in the Navy from 1943 – 1946 when he returned home. They married on September 4,1948 and built their first home together in Conway. A few years later they welcomed their four children, Linda, Glenn, Wendy and David.
Dad worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Over the course of their 60-year marriage, Dad’s job and promotions meant relocating and moving 9 times between Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina. As children we always had tears in our eyes as we left our friends and home behind, never dreaming we would ever be happy in a new place, but we always were. Mom made it look so easy. She had a gift of making every new house a home. It was just her way. She unknowingly modeled making new friends, how to be a good friend, inviting people into our home and showing us that you can build life-long friends wherever you go. Her kindness, caring, genuine love and friendship of people we met along the way were lifelong lessons for all of us.
Family was everything. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. Making memories was intentional and a priority to her. She planned trips and reunions to provide time together.
She loved traveling, golfing with the Sunday Duffers, cooking, baking and entertaining. However, her favorite pastime was playing cards, particularly Bridge. She was a Master Bridge Player and loved teaching others. She taught all the grandchildren many card games over the years. There was always a deck of cards ready when she was around. She has so many family traditions and memories to pass along to future generations. But, her mother’s recipe for Gallets, Belgian waffle cookies, will always be a family favorite.
Mom was predeceased by our dad, Hershel Glenn Campbell, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Glenn Campbell and his wife Cristy of Evans, Georgia; David Campbell and his wife Patty of Media, Pennsylvania and her two daughters, Wendy Voss and Linda Slocum of Cary, NC. Along with17 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.
We love you and will treasure the memories.
The family will have a small gathering on Sunday February 12, 2023 at Brown Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, NC.
