Former Beech Mountain, North Carolina resident Burt Powell, 85, passed February 25, 2021 in the year of our Lord.
At his request, no service will be held.
A quote that speaks to Burt’s life “The key to mortality is living a life worth remembering”.
Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Suzanne, their children Karen and Charles, and grandchildren Corey and Dylan Boat.
Burt was born to Charles Ralph Powell, II and Janice Wagner Powell on January 21, 1936 in his grandfather’s hospital on the bank of the Delaware River in Bristol, PA.
Burt was an outstanding baseball and football player at George School, Newton PA. From George School he was off to the University of Virginia where he earned his bachelors degree at the School of Commerce. While at UVA he met Suzanne at his best friend Buzzy and Kay’s wedding. From that moment on he, always said Suzanne was the one that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, and by the grace of God she said yes.
After leaving UVA, Burt joined the Army and spent two years in Killeen, Texas where his daughter Karen was born. He played baseball on the local Army team when he wasn’t at the “close enough” practice target range. He wanted to fly jets but was disqualified because he was colorblind.
Burt fulfilled his commitment and was honorably discharged. The family moved to south Florida and he went to work for Dunn and Bradstreet. In 1964, his Son Chuck was born and the family moved to Lighthouse Point where they lived for 40 years accumulating many close and dear friendships. Burt moved into the legal field going to work for the Law Firm of Fiebelman, Friedman, Hymann and Britton. After 20 years of dedicated service he moved on to help establish the Law Firm of Haley, Sinagra and Perez where he would finish his career retiring in the early 2000’s.
Burt loved golf and his regular foursome every Saturday morning at their 11:24 tee time like clockwork at Tamarac/Oaktree Country Club where he was a member for 25 years. He also loved working around the house, his stereo playing Neil Diamond and New Year’s Day brunch. But perhaps he loved most of all the Ruby Red grapefruit tree in the backyard.
In the early 70’s Burt and Suzanne discovered Beech Mountain while vacationing in the area and immediately knew “Beech” is where they would permanently retire. They purchased the property in 1979 and finished construction of their custom dream home in 1981. In the early 2000’s ,they saw their dream come true and moved there permanently. He loved golf on Beech and the area courses but their neighbors on the mountain is what made living there truly special.
Burt’s email was bpgrumpy but all that knew him, grumpy was a facade that wore like a badge of honor.
Rest In Peace dedicated husband, father and grandfather you will be dearly missed by many.
Il Silenzio,
Not goodbye, but we’ll see you later, Burt.
