Morty was born in the Bronx, NY, on August 17th, 1939. He graduated from Taft High School and C.C.N.Y (Baruch College) with a BBA and MPA degree. After serving in the NY National Guard and U. S. Army Reserve, Morty started his career with the U. S. Government, Social Security administration in 1962. He was a spokesperson for the Health Care Financing Administration and was on a weekly radio program answering questions about Medicare. He then retired from the Health Care Financing Administration as the Director of Beneficiary Services in the NY regional office. After a 35 year career with the U. S. Government, he and his wife Susan moved to Cary, NC in 1999 where Morty began a second career spanning 18 years as a substitute teacher in Cary elementary and middle schools. He was known to the students as “Mr. B”.
Morty was instrumental in establishing the Chabad of Cary Learning Center which is now a thriving synagogue where he and his wife worshiped. Morty was active in Heritage Pines community association and was President for years. His other activities included membership organizations that advocated for Israel and other Jewish causes.
Morty’s sense of humor made him popular with his peers, colleagues, and students. Morty’s greatest joy was centered around his participation in the lives of his eight grandchildren and his beloved wife of 55 years who passed away December 31st 2022.
He is survived by his son Steven of Brooklyn, NY and his daughter Jill and son in law Andrew Scoular of New Milford, CT and their children Benjamin, Emily and her husband Will and son Samuel, Daniel, Zachary and his wife Nujhat, Abigail, Rebecca, Harry; his sister Carol and brother in law Philip Hager of Florida and their sons Jonathan and Edward and their wives, Regina and Marsha.
