Michael Dee Robinson, 79, of Cary, NC, passed on peacefully to his eternal home on Sunday, May 19, 2024 after a prolonged illness. He was born June 6, 1944 to Harry and Dorothy Robinson and grew up in Winchester, VA.
After graduating from John Handley High School in Winchester in 1962, Mike earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering at Virginia Tech in 1967. He began his professional life with Dow Chemical in Midland, MI. He returned to Virginia Tech to pursue his Master’s Degree in Operations Research which he received in 1971. Mike then began his 32 year career with IBM in Manassas. VA. Over the next three decades Mike and his family moved to Texas twice, Georgia, Maryland, and ultimately North Carolina where he retired from the corporate world. After Mike “retired,” he earned his certification in residential real estate appraisal and for the next 15 years appraised property in the Triangle area.
Mike enjoyed travel and taking cruises. He loved his Diet Cokes. He was always on time! He was proud to be a Virginia Tech Hokie. Those who had the privilege of knowing Mike knew him as strong, resilient, organized, wise, and at times a bit ornery. Mike had many roles over his eight decades of life: husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, colleague, manager, mentor, and friend. He was highly respected in all those roles. While Mike was a private person, at times stoic, he was also very loving, caring, considerate, and good-hearted, always willing to offer guidance, coaching, and support.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of nearly 37 years, Wanda. He is also survived by his children Steven (Heather) of Henrico, VA and Julie Plante (Gerry) of Logan, OH; his brother Scott and nephew Erik of Weddington, NC; and Wanda’s daughter Kendra McIntire (Andy) and their son Logan, Wanda’s grandson, of Berryville, VA. Mike was preceded in death by his parents Harry and Dorothy and sister Pam.
A celebration of Mike’s life will be held on June 19 at 11:00am at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. A light lunch will be served following the celebration. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mike’s honor can be made to Transitions LifeCare hospice of Raleigh, NC (https://www.transitionslifecare.org/).
