Mike was born in Fort Wayne, IN, to the late Marilyn Dennis and Pfc. Robert J. Carder. He was also cared for by his grandmothers, Pearl Carder Rice and Grace Branstrator Dennis, after the death of his father during the invasion of Normandy in 1944. He was adopted by David Havert in 1947.
Mike was a proud graduate of Ft. Wayne Central High School, Class of ’61. He received his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Indiana University and Masters Degree in Human Resources from American University. His career path took him through Cicero, IL, Louisville, KY, Milwaukee, WI, Fort Wayne, IN, Schaumberg, IL, and Philadelphia, PA. He was accomplished in many ways and always rose to the demands of different business and economic conditions.
Mike felt best when he accomplished goals, whether coaching Little League, assisting youth Scouting programs, or teaching college students the intricacies of a successful job interview. As a life-long Lutheran, he served the church on pastoral call committees, building committees, and as Council President. After retirement, he was intake coordinator for Brunswick County Habitat for Humanity and coordinator for the Southport-Oak Island Food Pantry volunteer pick-up program. He spent time repairing homes in Mobile, AL after Hurricane Katrina and volunteered with the Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro, NC.
Mike felt most satisfied working on behalf of the Saint James NC Volunteer Fire Department. He helped establish the VFD in this small community, which included constructing the fire house, being taught the techniques of firefighting, training others, and was elected Fire Chief (2004 to 2007). His was a life of service.
Mike is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rochelle Tieman Havert; children Robert David (Sabby and Samantha ) of Duabi, UAE; Michael Brenden (Cecily, Jonah, and Caleb) of northern VA; and Pamela Havert Houston (Scott and Zachary) of Cary, NC; as well as siblings Jon, Jeff, Anne and Gina.
